If you have ear piercings (whether one or a bunch), you’re probably familiar with those teeny, clear, silicone earring backs that come with a new set of earrings. They’re super clutch for me when you lose one of your regular metal flatbacks and need to secure your studs. However, according to a recent TikTok PSA that’s starting to go viral, those clear rubbery backings can actually be super risky to wear for an extended amount of time. On Thursday, Oct 10, TikTok creator Amber Guttila shared her recent experience of almost being sent to the hospital over her clear earring backs…

It’s no secret that the U.S. is in the middle of a maternal mortality crisis. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show America has the worst maternal mortality rate of any developed nation. Unfortunately, that’s coinciding with high levels of birth worker burnout, making it even more challenging for American women to have the safe and comfortable birth experience they deserve. While there is no easy solution for fixing the complicated state of childbirth in the U. S., a growing number of people are turning to doula care to help them navigate the experience. Most…

The family of TikTok influencer Taylor Rousseau Grigg is sharing more about the health complications that led to the 25-year-old’s death last week. Grigg, a lifestyle content creator with more than 1 million followers on TikTok and several hundred thousand on Instagram, had opened up about her health challenges in a TikTok reel in August. Grigg said she had gotten sick shortly after her wedding, just over a year ago, although she didn’t receive a diagnosis until a few months ago. Rousseau’s family says her cause of death was complications from asthma and Addison’s disease, a rare chronic illness. Her…

Listeria contamination caused a multistate recall of deli meat this summer. Now, more ready-to-eat meat products are being recalled due to listeria—and this time, nearly 10 million pounds of meat are affected, including products sold under the Trader Joe’s and Fresh Express brands. Oklahoma-based meat company BrucePac has recalled more than 9.9 million pounds of meat and poultry products that may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The recall was originally issued on Wednesday, but was updated yesterday to include even more affected products. The meats were produced…

I’m a sucker for fall seasonality: as soon as October hits pumpkin decor is all over my apartment; I’m swapping my pale pink lip colors for more browns and reds, and —yes—I am consuming large amounts of pumpkin-spiced stuff. However, that seasonal shift also applies to my fall haircare and skincare routines. For most of us, cooler weather means drier and, sometimes, duller skin, but that doesn’t have to be the case. Getting on top of your transitional skincare routine can help keep your face looking and feeling its best even when it’s chilly and dry outside. But you may be…

If you, too, live the constantly-hunched-over-a-digital-device life, you may notice a bump start to develop at the base of your neck, and wonder how to fix that dang neck hump. The most common cause of the neck hump is—you guessed it—poor posture. “Not sitting correctly in front of your laptop or computer, or sitting hunched with your neck leaning forward when you’re on your phone can cause the muscles in your neck to work differently and your shoulders to get hunched forward, developing a curved hump” says licensed chiropractor Suzanna Wong, DC. “The muscle at the back of the neck…

And then I spent 12 years in New York City, walking to work in frigid sub-zero temperatures and bundling myself up in the coziest…

I’m a light sleeper. If light peeks under my bedroom door while I’m trying to sleep, or I hear my partner and his friends playing video games in the other room late at night, I end up tossing and turning, growing more frustrated each minute I’m not able to doze off. Falling asleep through noise and light is no easy task. From conversations with friends, I realize I’m not alone. Plenty of people I know have trouble falling asleep when exposed to noise or light they’re not used to. Things like traveling, moving into a shared living space, or even bunking…
