Muscle disintegration, organ failure, blood poisoning?! These horrifying symptoms aren’t the results of a sci-fi disaster scenario, they’re what happens when a person gets rhabdomyolysis, also known as “rhabdo.” Every few months and years, news pops up of athletes in the emergency room getting treated for rhabdo. In the past week alone, rhabdo has been in the news twice. On September 23, USA Today reported that 12 members of the Tufts University lacrosse team were diagnosed with the condition after an on-campus training. On September 25, People Magazine broke the news that a person’s arm “exploded” after an intense CrossFit…

Libra season is the epitome of relationship season this year. It’s not just that the sun and Mercury are in the sign of the scales during the first half of the month—it’s also the hot, sweet, and spicy aspects that Venus and Mars are making along the way (with one another and with other planetary bodies). Libra is usually one of the more relationship-oriented astro seasons, but this one is bringing the heat, starting with a powerful solar eclipse in Libra on October 2. This evocative, electrifying eclipse is in close proximity (aka conjunct) with feminist icon Black Moon Lilith,…

If you find yourself the butt of irritating “mom always has to pee” jokes, tell those jokers to can it. For one thing, having children is a common cause of those symptoms later in life—frequent urination or incontinence affects more than half of all post-menopausal women. For another, those symptoms are no joke: Incontinence can contribute to serious health issues if left untreated. “It’s accepted as status quo, like this is just normal,” says Leslee Subak, MD, a gynecologist at Stanford who researches urinary incontinence in women. Fluoride has come under the microscope after a federal judge ruled that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) must add more regulations around the mineral’s presence in drinking water. U.S. District Judge Edward Chen said mounting evidence suggests the amount of fluoride usually added to water could potentially lead to lower IQs in children, the Associated Press reported yesterday. Chen ruled that the EPA must take steps to lower this risk to children’s development, although he didn’t outline exactly what those steps should be. Fluoride has been added to drinking water since 1945 in an effort to promote tooth health…

A study out today by the American Society for Nutrition found that iron deficiency in pregnancy is more common than previously thought—even among people who take prenatal vitamins. The observational study, published in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, collected blood samples from 641 generally healthy pregnant people in Ireland at 15, 20, and 33 weeks of pregnancy. They also gathered information from the participants about their pregnancy, delivery, and baby 72 hours after delivery. The study found that while none of them were anemic in the first trimester, more than 80 percent of them were considered iron-deficient by the…

If you’re someone who trains for triathlons, marathons, or any other kind of competition, the itch is coming for you: the “vacation race” itch, where you travel to a destination race and soak up the fun of competing in a new location. I first got the itch when I moved to Colorado nearly a decade ago—seeing so many people travel to amazing races inspired me to begin doing the same. I have been competing in Ironman triathlons, where you swim 1.2 miles, bike 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles in one day, for nearly 10 years. Ironman races take place…

Between work, family obligations, catching up with friends, and everything in between, it’s easy to put exercise on the back burner until the weekend comes around and you have a little more free time. If that’s you, you’re in luck: New research published in Circulation suggests that people who squeeze their sweat sessions into one or two days of the week or weekend—often referred to as “weekend warriors”—might still reap the same health benefits as those who spread their exercise…
