By Kathleen Costello, MS, as told to Rachel Reiff EllisDrugs don’t work in people who don’t take them. It sounds over-simplified, but it’s true. And it’s not an MS-specific problem — it’s a challenge in any ongoing condition. This is related to hundreds of billions of dollars a year in additional health care costs. With MS, when you don’t stay with your treatment, there’s the chance that the disease will continue unchecked. That means your immune system can go on causing inflammation and…

I want to talk about two things that have happened since last weekend’s newsletter on pedestrian deaths. One of them was covered in this newspaper, and the other was a personal experience. The news item is that a young child was killed in Brooklyn this week, struck by a tow truck while crossing a street — at a marked crosswalk — with his mother. By Caroline Craven, as told to Hallie LevineI learned I had MS almost 20 years ago, in 2001. I was only 35, yet I couldn’t walk or see without assistance.  Today, I’m thriving. It’s so important for patients with MS to know that their diagnosis is not a death sentence. With the proper treatments, the disease can be controlled, and you can continue to live your best life. After my MS diagnosis, I had to reinvent my life. I had to give up my marketing career — I couldn’t work in an office 8 to 10 hours a day with my sensory…

Animal moves are great way to “trick” your child into exercising, building strength, improving mobility, and getting a great workout. The key is that rather than force exercise kids can have fun walking like a duck or instead of doing box jumps they can do frog jumps. However, we are not quadrupeds or amphibians or water fowl—we are humans with completely different anatomies than the animals we mimic. Therefore our animal moves aren’t exactly the same as the animals who actually perform them. They might look even different if you’re an adult practicing animal movements for mobility and strength. For…
