The announcement that the stand-up comedian Nate Bargatze would be hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend was met in some corners with a bit of confusion. When SNL goes the stand-up route for a host, it usually plucks an alum (John Mulaney, for instance) or a household name (Dave Chappelle, for example) to do the job. Bargatze is certainly popular, well known for specials on Netflix and Amazon that highlight clean jokes about family quirks, but SNL offered him perhaps his biggest platform to date to demonstrate to unfamiliar viewers who he is.The uninitiated got a show that leaned on…

A plan to allow Indigenous cultural investigators to enter private property in Victoria without the owner’s or renter’s permission has been slammed. The Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council warned that its staff investigating alleged cultural heritage breaches needed more power to do their job. The Council, which is under the wing of Victoria’s Department of Premier and Cabinet, used an example of the remains of an Indigenous person that might be in a shed but not retrieved because the occupier’s approval was needed for entry. This move outraged Sky News host James Morrow, who referred to it as the ‘culture police’, ‘Orwellian’, ‘statism’ and ‘anti-freedom’.His co-hosts Rita…

By Ann Marie Johnson, as told to Shishira SreenivasI was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) on New Year’s Eve in 2002. I was 32. At that time, I had just started embarking on my career in Brooklyn, NY. I just graduated from grad school and had started my new job, and I was an independent woman. I was always on the move. It’s funny because people often could hear me before they could see me. I’m a petite woman that used to wear 5-inch stilettos. Any given day, you could hear the clackity-clack as I was coming down the…

As a dietitian, I love all three macronutrients (macros) equally. Carbs provide my body with energy and fats protect my organs and impact hormonal production and regulation. But when I want something that will help me feel satisfied, my heart belongs to protein. When we consume protein, many things can happen in our body that help us feel more satiated, which may, in turn, help us avoid those annoying and distracting tummy grumbles that can happen shortly after snack time. Bonus? Protein can also support many other aspects of our health too, like tissue building and immune support. Many of…

I am watching the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza today and thinking about one of the world leaders I’ve most admired: Manmohan Singh. He was India’s prime minister in late November 2008, when 10 Pakistani jihadist militants from the Lashkar-e-Taiba group, widely believed to be linked to Pakistan’s military intelligence, infiltrated India and killed more than 160 people in Mumbai, including 61 people at two luxury hotels. What was Singh’s military response to India’s Sept. 11?He did nothing.Singh never retaliated militarily against the nation of Pakistan or Lashkar camps in Pakistan. It was a remarkable act of restraint. What was the…

Individuals often turn to running for achieving or sustaining a weight that is healthy, and justifiably so. A study published by the American Council on Exercise attests that running outperforms weightlifting, swimming, biking or even downhill skiing in burning calories. However, one might have the tendency to miscalculate the calories used up during an average run. Aspects such as your body mass, terrain type, incline steepness and various other elements factor into this measurement. Therefore it’s crucial to take these aspects into account when determining your total calorie burn from a run. Calculating Caloric Expenditure from Running There exist various…
